Ace Construction Texas

Excavation costs in Austin vary more than almost any other construction service because ground conditions vary so dramatically across the metro area. A project in flat eastern Pflugerville on clay soil costs very differently from the same scope on a hillside lot in Lakeway, where limestone is 12 inches down. This guide covers what drives excavation pricing in Austin and what you can expect for typical residential and commercial scopes of work.

Ace Construction Texas is a full-service excavating contractor serving the Austin metro and surrounding area. We’ve excavated in every type of ground condition Central Texas presents, from deep clay to solid Hill Country limestone.

The Austin Ground Condition Split

Austin’s topography creates two fundamentally different excavation markets, roughly divided by the Balcones Escarpment. East of the escarpment, in Pflugerville, Hutto, Manor, Round Rock, and the eastern suburbs, properties are in deep clay soil. Clay is dense but workable with standard excavation equipment. It cuts cleanly when conditions are right, compacts well for backfill, and doesn’t require the rock-breaking equipment that limestone demands.

West of the escarpment, in Lakeway, Bee Cave, Dripping Springs, and the western Cedar Park and Georgetown areas, limestone begins at 12 to 24 inches below grade across most properties. Once an excavation hits solid limestone, progress slows dramatically because the machine must switch from digging to breaking. A project that would take two hours in eastern Austin clay can take a full day in western Austin limestone.

We assess rock likelihood at every western Austin site visit before estimating. Visible outcroppings at the surface, shallow caliche layers, and prior excavation history on the property all indicate what the machine will hit. We don’t quote western Austin excavation projects without understanding the rock situation.

Utility Trenching in Austin

Trenching for water, sewer, electrical conduit, drainage pipe, and other utilities is one of our most consistent scopes in Austin. Trenching cost depends primarily on depth, length, soil type, and whether rock is present. Utility trenches in eastern Austin clay run $8 to $12 per linear foot for standard residential depths of 24 to 36 inches. The same trench in western Austin limestone runs $15 to $25 per linear foot or more, depending on how much rock is in the path.

Before any utility trenching begins, we confirm 811 utility locates. On properties with older infrastructure or rural utilities, we use private locate services. Cutting through an unmarked private water line or electrical conduit adds cost and time that affects the whole project. We don’t skip locates.

Haul-Off and Material Management

Excavated material that can’t be used on site needs to go somewhere. On most residential projects, clay soil excavated for a foundation pad or utility trench can be reused on site for backfill, grading, or berm construction. When there’s more material than the site can absorb, haul-off trucks are required.

Haul-off adds cost in two ways: truck time for loading and transport, and tipping fees at the disposal site. Austin area tipping fees for clean fill run $10 to $25 per ton, depending on the facility. A standard residential excavation might produce 20 to 50 yards of material. We estimate haul-off volume at the site visit and include it in the project scope when needed.

Site Preparation and Excavation Together

Site preparation and excavation often run together on new construction projects. After clearing, the site is rough-graded to establish the building pad elevation, and then foundation excavation digs to the specified depth within that pad. Coordinating the sequence of clearing, grading, excavation, and utility work in the right order avoids rework and keeps the project moving.

We handle the full site prep sequence and can coordinate with the foundation contractor for handoff timing. For concrete slabs and pads, we deliver the site in a condition ready for forming after excavation and base compaction are complete.

Getting an Excavation Estimate in Austin

Excavation estimates in Austin require a site visit. Ground conditions, access, depth requirements, and haul-off needs all vary too much between properties to quote remotely. Call 512-265-1198 or request an estimate, and we’ll walk the property with you. We serve Lakeway, Kyle, Georgetown, and all of Central Texas.
